COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
For those of you who are planning on applying to college (which is the vast majority of you!), we have outlined a few important steps that we would like you to follow for this process to run more smoothly. Therefore, we are asking each of you to read the following information very carefully and see us if you have any questions.
Obtaining Applications
If you are interested in applying to any of the 10 State University System of Florida schools, you can pick up a "universal" application in Guidance. We also have various other private school applications for both in and out-of-state schools, as well as for some community colleges. If we happen to not have the application(s) on hand in Guidance that you are looking for, we will provide you with the information that you need to obtain them. Phone numbers and addresses for all of the colleges and universities are available in the Guidance Office.
In most cases, you can now apply On-line to many colleges & universities. We would encourage you to check the websites of the schools you are interested in applying to to see what they recommend and what they have available.
Completed Applications
All completed applications require the following: 1. The Application: - Applications are to be completed and submitted to the college by the student. Be sure it is signed and dated! NEATNESS COUNTS!
2. Application Fee: - An Application Fee is required for most schools; make checks payable to the college/university to which you are applying. Application fees should accompany your application.
- If you apply on-line, you will need to either pay by credit card OR send your check separately before your application will be processed.
3. Transcript Request Form: - These are located just outside of the Resource Room in Guidance. Official Transcripts must be sent to the college by Guidance. A student's testing record (SAT & ACT) is a part of his/her transcript.
- Please note...some colleges require that the student's test scores come directly from the testing center. We will still send them as a part of their transcript; however students will have to request them directly from the test center when registering to take the tests, or afterward (keep in mind that there is a fee required to send them if it was not requested at the time of testing).
Students might also need to submit the following:
These items are only required when requested. - Letters of Recommendation - These are required for some schools. If necessary, the student must request these from a teacher, coach, administrator, or boss and should provide them with a self-addressed stamped envelope in which to send it (along with a copy of your transcript and activities resume). It is strongly recommended to give them 2 weeks advance notice for the letters! After 2 weeks have passed, be sure to confirm with the teacher that the letter has been sent.
- A "Counselor Recommendation Form," sometimes called a Secondary School Report, might also need to be completed by Guidance. If you have one of these recommendation forms, bring it to Guidance for us to complete and mail along with your transcript. Remember to give 2 weeks notice for these forms as well!
- Activities Resume - These can be sent to all schools in place of filling out the "activities section" of the application (simply write in "see attached resume"). Students will be required to complete and turn in a resume to their Senior Religion teacher.
- Essay - These are required for some schools. Students should include their name and social security number on this paper. It is important to spend some time on this part of your application because, in most cases, it will be the one thing that sets you apart from other applicants. It is recommended that you have these proof read by an English teacher for grammar and Guidance for content.
