Mr. Michael Olayos – Phys. E., & Art
Faculty Information
Mr. Olayos began coaching at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in 1993 as Head Coach of the Boys and Girls Cross Country program. The following year, he began his teaching duties at St. John Neumann, and also brought a state runner-up finish for the Boys Cross Country team. In 1995, Coach "O" oversaw the beginning of a Track program at the school, which has since produced several individual state champions as well as a first ever Regional title for the boys in 2008. The Cross Country, Basketball, and Track teams have amassed a total of 25 district titles during Coach Olayos' tenure. His last two Girls Basketball teams in 2001 and 2002 were ranked in the top 10 in the state, and he was voted Southwest Florida 1A or 2A Coach of the Year each of his 5 years at the helm. In 2008 Coach "O" was honored as the Southwest Florida Coach of the Year in Track by both the Naples News and the News Press.
Mr. Olayos attended The Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut where he captained the Cross Country and Track teams as well as played Ice Hockey for the school. He went on to a successful running career at Northeastern University in Boston where, at one time, he held the school record in the 400 meter hurdles for the Division 1 track program. He is a 1976 cum laude graduate with a B.S. degree in Physical Education.
The year following graduation found Coach Olayos in New York City, where he started the Cross Country and Track programs at The Franklin School on the upper west side of Manhattan. During his stay in the Big Apple, his teams notched a 1980 Private School Freshman State Championship in Cross Country, and the 1979 AA State Championship in Basketball, with a State Record 29 win season. While in New York, Mike was fortunate to earn a grant to do graduate study at the Teacher's College of Columbia University.
During the school day, Coach Olayos does not just confine himself to the gymnasium and his Health and Physical Education classes. Other teaching assignments have included: Drawing, Honors History, World Geography, Anatomy and Physiology, Economics, Government, and Freshman Study Skills. A great distinction in Coach Olayos' professional career came in 2004 when he was awarded the Edmund Rice Distinguished Educator Award by the faculty of St. John Neumann.
Mr. Olayos lives in Naples with his wife Cori, and children, Steven, Matthew, and Kellie.
